The Government Issues a Press Release on the Consultative Meeting in Jeddah

The Sudanese government issued a communique this evening (Sunday) following the return of its negotiating delegation with the US government in Jeddah, which stated:
With reference to the consultative meeting between the Government of Sudan headed by Minister Mohamed Bashir Abu Namu and the American delegation headed by Mr. Tom Perriello, the US envoy to Sudan, regarding Sudan’s invitation to participate in the Geneva Forum.
The consultative meeting was held on August 9-10, 2024 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
According to the introductions and content of the consultative meeting, the following is noted:
1- The US delegation’s failure to push the rebel militia towards commitment to implement the Jeddah Declaration, which includes a commitment to protect civilians in Sudan based on international humanitarian law and human rights law.
2- The US delegation’s insistence on the participation of the United Arab Emirates as an observer in Geneva Forum.
3- The US delegation did not provide any justification for establishing a new forum.
4- The US delegation relied on incorrect information in assessing the situation in Sudan.
The statement added: “The Sudanese government expresses the aspirations and hopes of the Sudanese people who are exposed to all forms of violence and serious violations and due to that they have lost their achievements, their material, moral and civilization properties at the hands of the rebel militia.”
Accordingly, the Sudanese government affirms its commitment to implementing the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023, and rejects the presence of any new observers or facilitators.
It welcomes initiatives that meet, respond to and preserve the sovereignty of the country and the dignity of the Sudanese people.
