The African-Caribbean Summit on Historical Justice and Reparations Kicks off in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa – Sudanhorizon
The second summit bringing together African and Caribbean countries kicked off this Sunday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Heads of state and delegates are participating to work towards deepening transcontinental partnerships.
The summit represents the African Union’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” The African Union had declared 2025 the “Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.”
This initiative affirms the African Union’s commitment to addressing historical injustices, including the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, apartheid, and genocide. It builds on decades of advocacy and cooperation and aims to promote unity and establish mechanisms for reparative justice on a global scale.
“From the shackles of slavery to the struggle against colonialism, Africa and the Caribbean have always had a shared story of resilience. Today, that story continues—not one of division, but one of unity, dignity, and justice,” commented IGAD Executive Director Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.
He added in a tweet on his X account that this morning, “I joined Heads of State and Delegates at the 2nd Africa-Caribbean Summit in Addis Ababa, where we are deepening transcontinental partnerships. Together, we are making one voice to advance reparative justice and build a future based on dignity, solidarity, and shared prosperity.”
