Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudanese Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, held a series of meetings with senior officials of international organizations in Geneva on Thursday. He met with Volker Türk, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and his senior aides where he presented an account of the unprecedented atrocities and violations committed by the rebel militia against civilians.

Idris discussed the Government of Hope’s peace initiative, outlining its provisions in detail, particularly those related to protecting and promoting human rights in the country, as well as those related to humanitarian work and the commitments it entails.
He further reviewed the government’s ongoing efforts to implement these provisions and the steps taken within the framework of confidence-building measures and national recovery, aiming to achieve the initiative’s objectives.
These include ending the rebellion and reaching a sustainable political settlement, enabling a successful transition process leading to elections that will allow the Sudanese people to choose their leaders.
During his meeting with Türk, the Prime Minister highlighted the challenges facing the implementation of the initiative, urging the international community to support and assist in implementing it for the purpose of achieving lasting peace in the Sudan.
The Prime Minister affirmed his government’s continued commitment to peace, cooperation, coordination, and constructive engagement with the country’s human rights mechanisms, represented by the country office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the designated expert on the human rights situation in the country.

For his part, the High Commissioner for Human Rights welcomed the initiative and expressed his gratitude for the cooperation and hospitality he received during his recent visit to the country.
He pointed out that his included meetings with government officials and national human rights mechanisms, as well as his field visit to the Northern State and his meetings with displaced persons who survived the events in El Fasher at the Al-Afadh camp for displaced persons in the Northern State.
He noted, within this context, the harrowing accounts he heard of the various forms of atrocities and violations they suffered during the rebel militia’s incursion into El Fasher and, prior to that, the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for displaced persons.
The Prime Minister has meanwhile held a lengthy meeting with the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Reverend Jerry Pillay, and his senior aides where he debriefed them on the systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure and sites, including churches, by the rebel militia.
He commended the sincere patriotic stances of the Christian community of all denominations and their support for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their allies in defending Sudan. He also noted his field visits and his firsthand observation of the destruction and looting of churches by the rebel militia, a blatant violation of religious sanctity and the inviolability of places of worship. He expressed his satisfaction with the situation of Christians in the country, who are now among the strongest supporters of the Government of Hope.
