Sudan’s Ambassador to Vienna Calls on the International Community to Intensify Pressure on the UAE
Vienna – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Organizations in Vienna, Magdi Ahmed Mufaddal, has debriefed diplomatic missions accredited to Vienna on Thursday about the humanitarian situation in the Sudan.
Mufaddal called on “the international community to stand on the right side of history by intensifying pressure on the United Arab Emirates and hold it accountable for its aggression against Sudan and designate the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia a terrorist entity.”
Ambassador Magdi stressed that the massacre in Kalugie perpetrated by the rebels last week, which claimed the lives of more than 120 civilians, mostly children and women, will not be the last massacre unless the international community takes a firm stance against the rebels and their regional backers. He stated that the international community’s disregard for the war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed by the rebels since the beginning of their rebellion in April 2023 has encouraged them to persist in committing further horrific crimes and unprecedented atrocities.
The briefing included a review of videos and photos highlighting some of the atrocities committed by the rebels and the latest developments on the ground. Ambassador Magdi addressed the most recent events in the country over the past four weeks, most notably the Kalugie massacre and the discovery of some of the horrific atrocities committed by the rebels in El Fasher through satellite imagery and testimonies from civilian survivors.
He also discussed the rebels’ continued targeting of power stations and humanitarian aid convoys, their use of mercenaries, and the information revealed by the director of the Humanities Research Lab at Yale School regarding the information they provided to the Security Council about the El Geneina massacre in June 2023, warning that El Fasher could face the same fate.
He emphasized that some international actors prioritize their economic, diplomatic, and security interests with the regional sponsor of the rebellion over the lives of civilians in Sudan, thus failing to give the Sudanese situation the attention it deserves. Furthermore, he mentioned the US Treasury Department’s decision to impose sanctions on Colombian entities and individuals involved in recruiting Colombian mercenaries to fight alongside the rebel militia. In the same vein, the Permanent Representative called on diplomatic missions in Vienna to support the efforts of the Government of Sudan with the Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency to restore radiotherapy services for tumors at the National Cancer Institute at the University of Gezira, and to support the joint declaration between the Government of Sudan and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization on the country’s industrial recovery program, and to support efforts to rebuild institutions related to the peaceful uses of atomic energy and the peaceful uses of outer space, and to combat transnational organized crime, drugs, terrorism, and arms smuggling.
