Dr. Mayada Swar al-Dahab expressed her regret and dismay at the statement attributed to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ramtane Lamamra, regarding his meeting with the “Taasees” group within the framework of the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue.
Swar al-Dahab said in press statements on Friday that her party “rejects any step seeking to impose an artificial fait accompli on the Sudanese people and any course of action that undermines national sovereignty, contradicts the internal will, and grants illusory legitimacy to the rebel militia.”
The head of the Sudanese Liberal Democratic Party added that she had reviewed “the recent statement issued by the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, in Nairobi, in which he indicated engagement in consultations with the Taasees group as part of peace efforts and a ceasefire in Sudan.
She underlined that her party “appreciates the envoy’s balanced positions and commends the constructive efforts within the framework of peace efforts and a ceasefire in Sudan,” but warns against granting illusory legitimacy to a faction that had previously announced the formation of a parallel government.
Ms Suwar al-Dahab described any step toward dialogue with Taasees as “a framework for the division project in Sudan, obstructing ongoing peace efforts, and thwarting the political process represented by the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue.”
Lamamra began a tour of the region in Nairobi as part of the new endeavor, meeting with opposition forces and Sudanese civil society figures there.
He is scheduled to arrive in Port Sudan early next week to complete his contacts with official bodies and Sudanese political forces in preparation for the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue sessions expected to be held on October 6 in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa under the auspices of the African Union and the United Nations.
