Ministry of Foreign Affairs Accuses UAE of Supporting Janjaweed Militia and Undermining Sudan’s Sovereignty
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon- 5 July 2025
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it described as “frenzied and hostile” actions by the government of Abu Dhabi in international forums, accusing the UAE of acting as the regional sponsor of the “terrorist Janjaweed militia” and of engaging in a sustained campaign against Sudan.
According to the statement, the UAE’s actions represent a continuation of its “ongoing aggression” against the Sudanese people, the state, and its cultural and economic foundations, using what the ministry characterised as “a militia that has committed acts of genocide.”
The ministry cited events at last week’s expert-level meetings of the Non-Aligned Movement in New York, where the UAE delegation allegedly lobbied to remove references to solidarity with Sudan from the draft communiqué and opposed language that described the Janjaweed militia as an armed group rebelling against Sudan’s legitimate authority.
Additionally, Sudanese officials accused the Emirati delegation of trying to insert language into the draft that referenced a so-called “parallel government” — a move Khartoum claims is part of an Emirati strategy to undermine Sudanese sovereignty and violate international norms. The ministry noted that this alleged attempt contradicts the positions of the UN Security Council, the African Union, the Arab League, and other international bodies that have rejected what it termed a “false entity,” dismissed outright by the Sudanese people.
“These shameless actions reaffirm the organic relationship between the Abu Dhabi regime and the terrorist militia,” the ministry said, calling the UAE a “rogue actor” that defies international law and the ethics of multilateral diplomacy. The statement referenced a recent New York Times investigation, which reportedly detailed the UAE’s provision of refuge and strategic oversight to the Janjaweed leadership.
The ministry further accused the UAE of playing a “destructive role” in multilateral diplomatic spaces concerning Sudan, citing similar interference during the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s summit in Istanbul last month and at recent sessions of the Arab League.
Khartoum maintains that the primary aim of the UAE’s participation in these forums is to “block any condemnation” of the Janjaweed militia and deflect attention from what Sudan alleges are the UAE’s direct responsibilities for crimes of genocide, terrorism, and human rights abuses committed by the group.
In closing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the international community — including governments and organisations — to prevent the UAE from using global platforms to enable impunity and protect what it described as “terrorism and genocide.” It warned that the Janjaweed militia, backed fully by the Abu Dhabi regime, continues to wage war against the Sudanese state and its people, posing a significant threat to regional peace and security.
