Sudan Prepares for Participation in the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly will hold its 80th annual session next September at its headquarters in New York. The session will begin on September 9, while high-level meetings will take place from September 23rd to 27th. The session will conclude on the 29th of the same month.

According to information obtained by Sudanhorizon, the war in Sudan will be among the main agenda topics on which the meetings will focus, including addressing global crises, alongside the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Other issues will also be discussed, most notably the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and international peace and security. The Assembly will dedicate a special ministerial meeting to this issue, in addition to discussing nuclear proliferation, climate and the environment, and combating corruption.

The Sudanhorizon news website learned that arrangements and preparations for the Sudanese delegation’s participation in all the meetings’ activities at various levels began some time ago. A diplomatic source told Al-Sudanhorizon that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the relevant embassies and other relevant parties in the country, has completed the preparation of the files related to the proposed agenda for Sudan, in addition to the thorough preparation of Sudan’s speech.

Although the source did not reveal the leadership of the Sudanese delegation, the Permanent Mission in New York has received a number of requests for meetings for the officials participating in the meeting with their counterparts and with officials from international institutions, and these requests have been submitted to the relevant authorities.

The sources expected that Sudan’s participation in these meetings would be of particular importance, given the critical circumstances the country is experiencing, given the humanitarian situation resulting from the ongoing crimes and violations perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces militia, their siege of some cities, and the denial of humanitarian aid to those in need, as part of their war on the country, which has lasted for more than two years.
