Sudan Embassy: Australian Parliament Discusses the Humanitarian Crisis in Darfur
Canberra – Sudanhorizon
The Australian Parliament on Wednesday heard a speech by the Minister of Energy and Climate Change, Chris Bowen, in which he talked about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, particularly the tragic conditions in El Fasher following its fall to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.
The Minister emphasized that the crisis in Sudan is one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with over 12 million displaced people and millions facing a severe food shortage. Thousands remain trapped inside El Fasher without access to water, food, or medicine.
Bowen explained that many members of the Sudanese community in his constituency have lost contact with their families in El Fasher since the city’s fall, noting the community’s deep concern and distress.
He called on the Australian Parliament to highlight the Darfur crisis both within Parliament and internationally, stressing the urgent need for the international community to act to protect civilians and support humanitarian efforts in Sudan.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong recently met with several representatives of the Sudanese community in Australia, who briefed her directly on the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Darfur.
