Geneva -Sudanhorizon

In his capacity as Chairperson of the African Group in Geneva, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, has chaired a meeting of African ambassadors with Mariana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The Permanent Representative delivered an opening statement on behalf of the African Group on the challenges of international humanitarian law in light of the multiple armed conflicts in the African continent and the escalating rate of non-compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law, particularly aspects related to the protection of civilians, with its two main aspects (field protection and providing a protective environment for civilians) during conflict.

Mariana Spoljaric, President of the Organization, provided a comprehensive overview of the Global Initiative to Strengthen Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law. She noted the proliferation of armed conflicts worldwide and their complexities, coupled with the lack of adherence to international humanitarian law, which prompted the Organization to launch a global initiative aimed at strengthening political commitment to international humanitarian law.

She noted that the initiative has been welcomed by many countries so far. She then provided a detailed account of the initiative’s main themes.

The African ambassadors made interventions and raised questions about the initiative. At the end of the meeting, the Permanent Representative Ambassador Hassan delivered a closing remarks on behalf of the African Group, thanking the Organization’s President for her keenness to launch the initiative and consult with the African ambassadors on the issue.
