Sudan and Azerbaijan Hold Political Consultative Meeting in Baku

The first political consultation mechanism between Sudan and Azerbaijan convened on Monday, in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. The meeting was chaired by Sudanese Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Muawiya Othman Khalid, and Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister, Yelchin Rafayev.

During the meetings, the two sides discussed bilateral relations and ways to support and develop them in various fields. They emphasized the importance of preserving Sudan’s territorial integrity and unity, safeguarding its independence and sovereignty, and protecting its national institutions, while categorically rejecting any interference in its internal affairs.

The Azerbaijani side expressed its appreciation for the steps taken by the Sudanese government to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need, open border crossings, and strengthen cooperation with the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and international partners.

The Sudanese side expressed its appreciation for the progress made in the South Caucasus peace process and for the initialing of the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in early August 2015, under the auspices of US President Donald Trump.

Sudan considered the agreement as a beginning of a new chapter of regional cooperation and integration. Sudan reiterated its full support for Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to rebuild the Karabakh region and create the necessary conditions for the return of Azerbaijani citizens to their homes.

Both sides emphasized the importance of activating and updating existing joint agreements and protocols to translate them into clear and effective action plans. They also stressed the importance of holding meetings of the Joint Ministerial Committee between the two countries, with the relevant authorities on both sides to determine suitable dates.
