Washington – Agencies

The Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan Group (ALPS), which includes the governments of the United States, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, as well as the African Union and the United Nations, condemned the recent attack on a UN humanitarian convoy in Sudan, which killed five UN humanitarian workers, wounded and killed several civilians, and destroyed the relief convoy in North Darfur.

The joint statement, issued Wednesday and published by the US State Department on Thursday, said that the ALPS group “strongly condemns the recent attack on a UN humanitarian convoy, which resulted in the deaths of humanitarian workers and the destruction of aid intended to save civilians.”

The statement added that the group expresses its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and communities of those killed while working to help others in dire need.

“Any attacks directed against civilians and civilian objects, including humanitarian personnel and property, constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law,” according to the joint statement, which added, “As the situation in Sudan deteriorates and humanitarian needs reach critical levels, the coalition urgently reaffirms that international humanitarian law must be fully respected. This includes obligations to protect civilians, including humanitarian workers.”
