Special Security Council Session on Sudan Early Next Week

A well-informed government source disclosed to the “Sudanhorizon” news site that the United Nations Security Council will hold a special session on Sudan next Monday, August 5.
According to the informed source, during the meeting, the Security Council will receive the periodic report on the current situation in Darfur from the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan.
Diplomatic sources indicate that Sudan’s Permanent Mission in New York will participate in the meeting and provide commentary on the ICC prosecutor’s upcoming report.
In June, the ICC launched a new investigation into extensive violations in the Darfur region, which human rights organizations have classified as war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. Arrest warrants are anticipated for those accused of these crimes.
ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan recently issued an urgent call on his (X) account, requesting partners to provide any information that could substantiate reports of crimes in the Darfur region, particularly in the city of El Fasher, where clashes are ongoing between the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels.
Khan urged partners to provide evidence supporting the allegations, noting that the evidence gathered by the ICC indicates repeated atrocities and crimes against civilians, especially targeting camps for displaced people, including sexual violence.
It is worth mentioning that the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General stated in the last two days pointing to extensive violations committed by the RSF during her visit to refugee camps in Chad at the end of July.
According to a previous statement from the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accusations from the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative regarding RSF’s sexual violence were corroborated by testimonies and field reports from human rights organizations and international experts.
