Sources: Saudi Crown Prince to Press Trump to Intervene for Ending Sudan War

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is expected to press US President Donald Trump to personally intervene to end the war in Sudan during talks in Washington, five sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

The sources, diplomats including two Arabs and three Westerners, added that the Crown Prince believes direct pressure from Trump is needed to break the deadlock in negotiations that have been ongoing for more than two and a half years, pointing to his efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza last month.

The conflict erupted in 2013 amid a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ahead of a planned transition to civilian rule. The fighting has resulted in ethnically motivated killings, widespread destruction, and mass displacement, prompting foreign intervention and threatening to divide Sudan.

In recent months, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces militias have increasingly relied on drone attacks, causing heavy civilian casualties.

Sources indicated that Saudi Arabia is seeking to win over the US president, who presents himself as a peacemaker and has repeatedly expressed his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving global conflicts, by raising the issue with Trump.

The Saudi government’s media office did not respond to a request for comment. Middle East Eye had previously revealed the Saudi plan to discuss the Sudanese situation with Trump.

The US, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt are part of an informal group known as the Quartet working to resolve the conflict, but their efforts have yet to yield tangible progress.

For Saudi Arabia, ending the war is linked to its national security, as hundreds of kilometers of Sudanese coastline lie opposite the Saudi coast on the Red Sea.

Regional rivalry among the Gulf states also plays a role in the situation.
