Saudi Grant, Chinese Agreement Support Efforts to Resolve Gedaref Water Crisis

Director General of the Dams Implementation Unit Badr Al-Din Mahmoud said on Monday that the water crisis in Gedaref State is receiving high-level attention from the country’s leadership, describing it as an issue that extends beyond the state’s borders and constitutes a national priority.

Mahmoud said Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan is directly following up on the Gedaref water file, noting that addressing the water crisis is part of the state’s agenda because of its direct connection to citizens’ stability and support for agricultural activity in the state.

Speaking during a meeting between the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Gedaref State government, and farmers, Mahmoud revealed new arrangements and agreements with the Chinese contractor implementing the Comprehensive Solution for Gedaref Water Project. The arrangements aim to complete the remaining works and move the project toward completion.

He explained that the new agreements with the Chinese contractor are based on specific guarantees and procedures intended to create suitable conditions for resuming and completing the works, ultimately achieving the project’s main objectives and providing a sustainable water source for the state’s residents.

Mahmoud said the Dams Implementation Unit is coordinating with relevant authorities to overcome obstacles that have prevented the completion of some components of the project. He stressed that the coming phase would see greater momentum in priority water projects, particularly those directly linked to people’s lives and agricultural development.

The director general also announced that work on the Saudi-funded well-drilling project is progressing rapidly. The project aims to drill 35 wells in several areas of Gedaref State, including 15 wells at Abu Al-Naja Station. He explained that the implementation of these wells represents important support for efforts to provide additional water sources, alleviate the hardships faced by residents, and strengthen water supplies to areas suffering from water shortages.

Mahmoud stressed that the multiple tracks currently being pursued—including completion of the Comprehensive Solution Project, well drilling, and implementation of urgent water projects—form part of a broader vision aimed at addressing the Gedaref water crisis comprehensively rather than relying solely on temporary solutions.

He emphasized that the coming phase would see further momentum behind strategic water projects in the state, with the aim of achieving a sustainable solution to the water crisis and providing stable and safe water sources that meet residents’ needs and support the agricultural sector, one of the key pillars of Gedaref State’s economy.
