Saudi-American Talks Address Developments in Sudan

Riyadh – Sudanhorizon– Agencies

Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji met with U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Riyadh to discuss the situation in Sudan.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Sunday, the meeting reviewed “the latest developments in Sudan and explored avenues for bilateral cooperation” and other issues of mutual interest.

Jeddah Negotiation Track

Both Saudi Arabia and the United States are co-sponsors of the “Jeddah Negotiation Track,” which produced the Jeddah Understandings in May 2023. These agreements outlined commitments to:

  • Protecting Civilians: Ensuring the safety of civilians and facilitating humanitarian efforts.
  • Safe Passage: Allowing civilians to voluntarily leave conflict zones safely.
  • Civilian Safety Measures: Taking all precautions to minimize harm to civilians and avoid their use as human shields.
  • Respecting Civil and Public Facilities: Prohibiting the use of medical, water, and electricity facilities for military purposes and ensuring their protection.

Sudanese Government’s Stance

The Sudanese government has steadfastly committed to the Jeddah Declaration and has called for its full implementation. It insists that withdrawing rebel forces from civilian areas and private properties, including homes, is a prerequisite for resuming negotiations.

This dialogue reflects the ongoing diplomatic efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United States to facilitate a resolution to the Sudanese conflict while emphasizing the importance of humanitarian principles and civilian protection.
