Revamping the El-Gezirah Dairy Project: A Strategic Step for Reconstruction and Sustainable Development
By Numan Yusuf Muhammad
Restarting operation of El-Gezirah Dairy Project, owned by the El-
Gezirah Dairy Cooperative Society, is a strategic step that goes beyond simply resumption of production. It directly contributes to reconstruction and development efforts in the post-war phase. The project constitutes a vital production resource that can play a pivotal role in supporting the local economy, enhancing food security, and revitalizing economic activity in one of the sectors most closely linked to people’s lives and daily needs.
On the economic level, the project’s reactivation contributes to increasing local production of milk and dairy products, reducing reliance on imports, thus alleviating pressure on foreign currency reserves and helping to stabilize markets and prices. Furthermore, reviving the project’s operations means stimulating a wide range of related activities, including livestock production, feed supply, processing, transportation, and distribution. This, in turn, creates new job opportunities and revitalizes the economic cycle in both rural and urban areas.
On the social level, restarting the project presents an opportunity to enhance the livelihoods of families by providing jobs, supporting local producers, and increasing the incomes of workers in related sectors. The project’s success also restores confidence in the ability of cooperative institutions to contribute to reconstruction and development, thereby strengthening the spirit of community participation and empowering local communities to play an active role in economic recovery.
From an environmental perspective, reviving the El-Gezirah Dairy Project based on modern and sustainable production principles can support the optimal use of local resources and encourage the adoption of more efficient production practices, thus reducing waste and enhancing environmental sustainability in the agricultural and livestock sectors.
The reactivation of the El-Gezirah Dairy Project is not merely the restoration of a production facility; it is an investment in economic, social, and environmental recovery, and a practical message that reconstruction begins with supporting productive projects capable of creating value and driving sustainable development in the post-war phase.
