National Umma Party: We Advised the PM to Make Logical Concessions in Order to Form the Cabinet

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
Deputy Chairman of the National Umma Party, Gen. Sidiq Ismail, has described his party’s meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris on Tuesday as a private meeting, and that it was the first between the PM and Sudanese political forces.
Ismail said in a statement to Sudanhorizon that the meeting came within the framework of the contacts with the current leadership in the country, with the aim of providing advice and opening bridges of consultation and discussion on strengthening the civilian transition that began with Idris assuming this government as a civilian prime minister.
He added, “We also work to support steps aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace and working to reach a comprehensive democratic transition.”
He explained that the party expressed its readiness to cooperate with all those in the government and to ensure the appreciation of the role of the military establishment, which has preserved the existence of the Sudanese state, and all friends in neighboring countries who have contributed significantly to enabling the military establishment preserve the country’s survival.
The Umma Party’s Deputy Chair has meanwhile described their meeting with the Prime Minister as “very good, useful, and fruitful.” He said that all the signs preceding this meeting indicated that the Prime Minister had been reluctant to engage with political forces.
He however added that some saw this as a path to correction, and that this barrier has now been broken. He noted that Idris spoke in a positive spirit about the party, its history, and its contributions.
He said, “The Umma Party came to this meeting with the aim of opening channels of communication with all parties in order to achieve comprehensive peace and bring about a comprehensive democratic transformation that would lead to the management of national affairs and to those chosen by the Sudanese people of their own free will.”
He noted that the meeting is a prelude for all other political forces to communicate with the current civilian PM to strengthen the civilian-led approach toward achieving the desired democratic transformation.
The Umma Party’s deputy chairman stated that there was no discussion of forming a government within the context of the current dispute. He said, “However, we made some observations regarding the dispute between the armed struggle forces and the prime minister, and we advised the parties to make logical concessions that would enable the formation of the government, launch the process of civilian rule in the country, and bring about the democratic transformation we aspire to.”
Regarding the presence of Umma Party leaders with the Rapid Support Forces militia, while others are lining up with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the Umma Party’s official has argued that this was the result of assessments, stressing that the correct position is one that supports the Sudanese people, strengthens their sovereignty, and preserves the existence of the Sudanese state.
He said, “This is what we are doing now.” He denied the existence of a division within the party, and said that there were differing views on the correct paths and approaches to achieving the party’s overall goals, adding, “One of them may succeed, and others will follow.”
