Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
On Monday, Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ali Yusuf, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, chaired a joint talks session between the two parties on the sidelines of the Secretary-General’s visit to Port Sudan.
At the beginning of the session, the Minister thanked the Secretary-General and the Arab League Secretariat delegation for their strong and clear stance in supporting Sudan as it fights its national dignity war against the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia, its mercenaries, and their regional supporters.
The Minister outlined the Sudanese government’s current priorities, which include achieving security and stability across Sudan and continuing the implementation of humanitarian response plans. He also highlighted the role of the Arab League in supporting national efforts to address the current humanitarian situation through mobilizing regional and international support, as well as its expected role in the coming period to support development cooperation projects and reconstruction. The Minister urged regional and international partners to contribute to this effort.
The discussions also addressed the vital role of the Arab League’s Secretariat and its institutions in supporting the issues of the Arab world, preserving Arab unity, addressing internal disagreements, and activating joint Arab work on all fronts, particularly concerning the food security initiative and human resources development topics.
The session covered key Arab issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause. It reaffirmed the steadfast position based on Arab consensus and the Arab Peace Initiative, aimed at reaching a fair and comprehensive solution that guarantees the end of the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon was also emphasised.
It is worth noting that the Secretary-General of the Arab League arrived in the country on Monday for a two-day official visit.
For his part, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the Arab League’s stance in support of Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and its right to protect its national security against foreign interventions. He stressed the League’s continued support for Sudan until it overcomes its current crisis.
