Mineral Resources Company Withdraws Office from Border Triangle

Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shamam
The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company (SMRC) has pulled out it staff from the border triangle following the recent events witnessed by the area.
On Wednesday, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced that it was evacuating troops from the border triangle with Egypt and Libya, following a joint attack launched by forces affiliated to Libyan General Khalifa and the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia.
SAF has explained in a statement that this move came “as part of defensive arrangements to repel the aggression.”
A well-informed source told Sudanhorizon that the company had actually withdrawn its staff in the triangle a day before the attack, following the security tensions that prevailed in the area.
He explained that the office is the only government office in the area that oversees the artisanal mining sector and its workers.
The border triangle between Sudan, Egypt, and Libya is located in the far north of Darfur region in western Sudan. The joint border point starts in the north at the tripoint with Egypt on Jabal Uwaynat.
