Mauritanian President Mohamed Cheikh Ould Ghazouani sent a written letter, on Thursday, to his Congolese counterpart, Denis Sassou Nguesso, exchanging views on strategic issues of mutual concern to both countries. The Congo News Agency reported that President Denis Sassou Nguesso met in Oyo, in the province of Kouvite, with Mauritanian Minister of Economy and Finance, Sid’Ahmed Ould Bouh, who carried a message from President Mohamed Cheikh Ghazouani. The message addressed issues of common interest between Congo and Mauritania, which enjoy friendly relations and cooperation in various fields.
The Mauritanian Special Envoy Sid’Ahmed Ould Bouh affirmed the two leaders’ convergence of views on several major issues, most notably accelerating the restructuring of African projects and promoting free economic trade.
The Mauritanian envoy also requested Congo’s support for Mauritania’s candidacy for the presidency of the African Development Bank, the continent’s leading development financing institution. He also highlighted the challenges of these elections, scheduled for May 29.
The Sudanhorizon news website reports that Mauritanian candidate Sidi Ould Tah is the current president of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), headquartered in Khartoum but temporarily relocated to Cairo due to the war. During his tenure as president of the Arab Bank, he succeeded in tripling its capital. His career has now gained the support of several countries.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) presidency is facing stiff competition from four other candidates: Zambian Dr. Samuel Mwenzeli Maimbu, representative of the Southern African Development Community; South African Bagabulile Swazi Tshabalala, former vice president of the AfDB; Senegalese Amadou Hott, former vice president of the AfDB; and Chadian Abbas Mahamat Toli, former governor of the Bank of Central African States.
