Khidir Basheer Theatre Resumes Activities in Khartoum

Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Jaber, Member of the Sovereign Council has inaugurated the reopening of the Khader Bashir Theater in Khartoum North on Sunday. The theater will resume its activities and present artistic and dramatic works.
Jaber who is the Head of the Higher Committee for Preparing the Public Environment for the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State, has emphasized that the reopening of the Khader Basheer Theater represents an important message and a new beginning for restoring cultural and social life in Khartoum State to its former glory.
He stated that culture and the arts are not luxuries but rather a fundamental pillar in rebuilding society and strengthening the spirit of national belonging.
The return of this theater signifies the return of a platform for enlightenment, creativity, and community dialogue. He added that the Higher Committee for Creating a Conducive Environment is working to create suitable conditions for citizens to return to their homes, noting that the rehabilitation of cultural facilities is crucial in unifying the Sudanese people through various artistic and dramatic works.
Jaber directed that cultural competitions be held among the state’s localities as part of the Khartoum Sports and Cultural Festival, which began in early 2026, with the finals taking place at the National Theatre. He pledged support for the competitions, culminating in honoring the winners.
The Governor of Khartoum, Ahmed Osman Hamza, explained that the state government is giving great attention to the reconstruction of cultural and artistic institutions, considering them an integral part of the community recovery process.
He said that the Khader Basheer Theatre has been and remains a testament to a rich artistic and cultural history, and its reopening today represents a strong boost to the cultural movement in Bahari and Khartoum in general. He indicated that the state will continue to support initiatives that contribute to restoring normalcy and strengthening social cohesion. For his part, the Director General of the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism, Professor Al-Tayeb Saad Al-Din, confirmed that the rehabilitation of the theater included improving the infrastructure and technical equipment to keep pace with the requirements of modern theatrical work, indicating that the ministry seeks to revive the role of theaters as centers of cultural influence
