Prime Minister Kamil Idris on Monday issued an appeal to the UN Secretary-General, urging the Security Council and the General Assembly to lift the siege on El Fasher and open humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to the population and prevent the use of starvation as a weapon against civilians.

In his message published by the Sudan News Agency, he said:

“I stand before you today with an urgent and painful appeal. The city of El Fasher is under siege. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped. Families are starving and children are dying before our eyes — not because of a lack of global resources, but because of deliberate and intentional obstruction.”

He stressed that what is happening in El Fasher is not merely a humanitarian crisis; rather, it is a moral test for the United Nations.

He pointed out that international law prohibits the use of starvation as a weapon in wars, and that the right to life, food, and medical care are not privileges but fundamental human rights. Stating that “Nevertheless, these rights are being violated in El Fasher with every passing hour.”

The Prime Minister appealed to the Security Council and the General Assembly to act immediately to lift the siege and open humanitarian passages, adding: “The people of El Fasher cannot wait for more procedural discussions or delayed decisions. Their survival depends on your urgent and united action.”

He continued, “History will record whether the United Nations chose silence or solidarity; whether it allowed an entire city to perish, or stood firmly to protect the innocent.”
