Interior Minister Urges International Community to Pressure UAE to End Supporting Militias

Geneva –Sudanhorizon

Interior Minister, Lieutenant General Babiker Samra Mustafa, delivered Sudan’s statement before the ministerial sector of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council.

Samra reviewed the dire humanitarian situation resulting from the proxy war waged by the militias, which, since the outbreak of the rebellion, have adopted a strategy of targeting civilians and vital infrastructure with the intent of force displacing and effecting demographic change in several areas.

The Interior Minister called on the international community to pressure the United Arab Emirates to cease its military and logistical support for the rebel militias, emphasizing that this continued external support prolongs the war, exacerbates the suffering of civilians, and threatens security and stability throughout the region.

The Minister highlighted the catastrophic consequences of the massacres recently perpetrated by the militias in El Fasher, and previously in numerous other areas, which have transformed Sudan into the world’s largest hub for internal displacement and forced migration, with more than 12 million Sudanese forced to flee their homes internally or cross borders into neighboring countries as refugees. This has transformed Sudan from a country of destination and transit to a source of migration.

The minister outlined the Sudanese government’s efforts to strengthen integrated migration management through enhanced border control, dismantling migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks, improving identity services and registration of foreigners, and organizing voluntary returns, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration, despite the significant challenges posed by the insurgency.
