Industry Ministry: Over 1877 Factories Looted

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The Minister of Industry and Trade, Mahasin Ali Yaqoub, revealed that 1,877 factories have been subjected to looting and theft, including 1,267 that were partially destroyed.

Speaking at a Sudan News Agency forum today in Port Sudan, the minister stated that “the brutal assault by the militia targeted the industrial sector and caused massive destruction to infrastructure and electricity.”

She confirmed the complete destruction of 553 factories in the states of Gezira, Khartoum, and Sennar, in addition to the Sennar and Al-Junaid sugar factories, which brought economic activity to a halt.

She explained that the rise in imports from abroad is due to the shutdown of domestic production.

The minister disclosed an emergency plan to revive productive sectors across the states and redistribute industries according to comparative advantages.

She noted that work has resumed in 143 oil presses, and flour mills are now operating at 67% capacity to supply wheat and flour. Approximately 18 mills are functioning with a production capacity of 110,000 tons, resulting in a production surplus.

The minister praised the commitment of state governors to creating a suitable investment environment and facilitating procedures.

She revealed that a field survey has been conducted in the states of Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar, and White Nile to determine the extent of damage to the sector and address electricity issues.

She affirmed ongoing work on special facilitation measures concerning procedures and taxes, as well as coordination with the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock, and Minerals to determine export priorities. She also announced a halt to fertilizer imports and efforts to localize the production of fertilizers, pesticides, and vaccines.

“We are facing a major challenge, and the militia thought it could sabotage and destroy everything, but we will be able to return once again,” she said.

She affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is the primary authority responsible for import permits and banking transfers.
