Djibouti – Sudanhorizon

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) said it has been informed of the Government of Eritrea’s decision to withdraw from the organization, which was communicated through an official verbal note submitted to the IGAD Secretariat.

A statement issued by the organization’s Executive Secretariat on Friday noted that Eritrea had voluntarily suspended its participation in the organization for nearly two decades before officially rejoining following the 14th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government held in June 2023. On that occasion, all member states unanimously and warmly welcomed Eritrea’s return, reflecting a collective commitment to inclusivity, regional solidarity, and renewed cooperation.

IGAD expressed regret over Eritrea’s lack of participation in its meetings, programs, or activities since June 2023. The statement said that during this period, the Secretariat demonstrated patience and goodwill, while maintaining openness and readiness for constructive engagement.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) further expressed deep regret over the decision to withdraw without the submission of concrete proposals or engagement in specific institutional or policy reforms.
