On Tuesday, Lieutenant General Engineer Ibrahim Jaber, a Member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, chaired a meeting of the High-Level Committee for Coordination with the United Nations. The meeting discussed several topics related to Sudan’s cooperation with international organisations.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said he had provided a briefing on Sudan-related matters at the UN Security Council, particularly regarding a new British draft resolution on Sudan. He explained that this resolution focuses on the Jeddah Forum and the implementation of its outcomes. The committee reviewed the pros and cons of the resolution and agreed on the necessity of engaging with friendly nations in the Security Council to contain its impact.
Ambassador Al-Amin further noted that the meeting received a report on Sudan’s participation in the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, presented by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice. He highlighted that discussions at the Human Rights Council often focus on civilian protection and human rights violations. The Special Committee on Violations presented a comprehensive report in the previous session, documenting the atrocities committed by the RSF militia against civilians. The committee is expected to present a National Plan for Civilian Protection soon.
In response, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber directed the formation of a specialised task force, led by the Minister of Interior and comprising representatives from relevant ministries, to prepare a strategic response and action plan regarding this issue.
The Foreign Ministry Undersecretary also briefed the meeting on Sudan’s formal complaints to the UN and other international bodies concerning the Nairobi meeting sponsored by the Kenyan government.
Additionally, the meeting deliberated on the renewal of the UN expert panel mandated under Resolution 1591, which imposes arms embargo restrictions on Darfur.
The meeting also reviewed the visit of the Regional Representative of the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) to Sudan and his engagements with various ministries. Lieutenant General Jaber instructed the formation of a specialised committee to incorporate UNDP programmes into Sudan’s reconstruction projects.
