Gezira Scheme Completes Planting of 110,000 Feddans of Wheat

The Gezira Scheme has completed planting 110,000 feddans in wheat, out of a total targeted area of 300,000 feddans for this season. Of this, 10,000 to 15,000 feddans are designated for seed production to address the seed shortage.

Engineer Ibrahim Mustafa, Governor of the Gezira Scheme, confirmed in a statement to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) that his administration is determined to complete planting all targeted areas by the end of December and ensure the smooth operation of all agricultural activities.

He pointed to a number of obstacles that hindered the winter planting season, including financing challenges and production inputs high cost

The Governor indicated that his administration’s plan for the next phase aims to overcome the financing and agricultural input obstacles by expanding seed planting areas and importing inputs from their sources. He expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support from international organizations in advancing production within the Gezira Scheme.

The governor of the Gezira project reassured farmers of the great efforts being made to remove irrigation bottlenecks and clear canals of weeds, announcing the completion of clearing 150 canals out of 700 canals that are currently being cleared, after providing 95 dredgers that are now working on clearing irrigation canals, in addition to providing 50,000 gallons to operate the dredgers.
