German Official Meets al-Burhan, Describes Situation in El-Fasher as “Horrific”

The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, held talks on Sunday with Sarah Bauer, the German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, to discuss bilateral relations and developments in Sudan.

According to a statement issued by the Sovereignty Council, al-Burhan stressed the importance of Germany’s role as a key member of the European Union, noting that Germany has been one of Sudan’s largest supporters for decades.

The German diplomat arrived in Sudan two days ago, during which she visited areas affected by the war.

Undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, stated that the Sovereignty Council Chairman briefed the visiting official on the current situation in the country, highlighting the violations committed by the militia against the state, its institutions, and the Sudanese people.

He emphasized the importance of Germany’s constructive engagement in helping to find a peaceful solution and pressuring the militia and its backers to end the war and the suffering of Sudanese civilians.

In a press statement, Minister Bauer said that she had visited Chad, where she held talks with local officials and met with Sudanese refugees along the Sudan–Chad border, witnessing firsthand the immense hardships they face.

She added that she observed a strong desire among Sudanese people for peace, so that citizens can return to their work, children to their schools, and millions of displaced people to their homes.

> “This war must stop immediately,” she declared.

Bauer described the situation in El-Fasher as “horrific to an extreme degree,” pointing out that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have besieged the city for more than 500 days, launching attacks on facilities, places of worship, and shelters.

She affirmed Germany’s condemnation of sexual and gender-based violence being used systematically as a weapon of war by the RSF, and demanded that the group lift the siege of El-Fasher immediately and respect international humanitarian law.

The German Minister of State urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and prioritize the protection of civilians.
