Former Senior Egyptian FM Official: Our Position in Sudan Remains the Same

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Moussa
Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister and former Director of the Sudan Department at the Ministry, Ambassador Hossam Eissa, commented on the remarks made by the leader of the Rapid Support Forces militias, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), who reassessing his stands towards Egypt, saying this was an acknowledgment of Egypt’s influence and an attempt by the RSF militia leader to avoid provoking Sudan’s strong neighbor.
Ambassador Eissa, a former Egyptian ambassador in Khartoum, has told Sudanhorizon news website that Hemedti was trying to justify his action in the border triangle between Sudan, Egypt, and Libya, adding that this should be seen as a pragmatic means to avoid provoking a strong regional neighbor that has influence in these circumstances.
He confirmed that Egypt is closely monitoring the situation, particularly in the border triangle. He also affirmed that Egypt is steadfast in not being involved in any wars beyond its borders and does not initiate war against anyone.
He stated that Egypt’s position would also remain unchanged in supporting the Sudanese state and its institutions, led by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), emphasizing that the Sudanese Armed Forces are the guarantor of safety in Sudan.
He added that the presence of militias and weapons outside the control of the state leads to division and instability, and Egypt’s stance on militias in general and in any country is principled.
He cited what militias have done in countries in the region, which has led to the collapse of central governments, adding that the presence of militias is the beginning of the decay of any state and a threat to its national security.
The Egyptian former assistant foreign minister referred to Himidti’s previous statement regarding the participation of Egyptian aviation in several locations in Sudan, saying it is known that this is a strategy in the event of a defeat and attempts to justify it.
He affirmed that these accusations have no basis in fact, and that Hamidti has not provided any evidence to substantiate them. He stated that Hamidti is trying to secure himself against Egypt’s influence and is dealing with the presence of his forces in the border triangle very carefully, confirming that Egypt does not seek direct intervention outside its borders but aims to protect those borders from any party.
It is to be noted that the RSF militia leader ‘Hamidti’ had confirmed in a statement on ‘Sunday’ that there is no bone of contention on their side with neighbouring countries, indicating that his forces, which have taken control of the border triangle, are working to secure the area against terrorists, criminals, and drug trafficking, in addition to securing the borders with neighbouring countries represented by Egypt, Libya, and Chad. He added while addressing a gathering of his forces: “Our problems with Egypt were planted by these criminals, and we have reviewed our accounts; we must resolve our issues with Egypt through dialogue at the table, not through quarrels.”
