First Scheduled Flight Lands at Khartoum Airport Since Outbreak of War
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The first scheduled flight since the outbreak of war in Sudan nearly three years ago landed at Khartoum International Airport on Sunday, marking an important step toward the restoration of civil aviation operations.
A Sudan Airways (Sudanair) aircraft touched down on the airport’s runway arriving from Port Sudan, carrying a number of passengers, making it the first officially scheduled flight to reach Khartoum since air traffic at the airport was suspended.
The airline offered promotional ticket prices for the flight, set at around USD 50 per seat, as part of efforts to stimulate air travel and gradually restore confidence in domestic air transport.
Although some civilian aircraft had landed and taken off from Khartoum Airport in recent months, Sunday’s flight is considered the first officially announced and scheduled flight since the outbreak of the war.
Khartoum International Airport had sustained significant damage as a result of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, before the government began maintenance and rehabilitation works on several of its operational facilities months ago.
The Director of the Sudan Airports Company, Sir Al-Khatim Babiker, said in press statements that Khartoum International Airport has resumed operations with good operational capacity, confirming its readiness to carry out its duties.
“We reassure passengers and airlines that all operational tasks at the airport are being carried out,” Babiker said.
He added that the airport is capable of receiving four aircraft simultaneously and is fully equipped with the necessary systems for safe operation, noting that this phase represents the beginning of domestic flights and a step toward restoring international air connectivity.
For his part, Khartoum Airport Operations Director Mohamed Jaafar stated that the airport is secure in terms of operational systems and security measures, confirming that all protection procedures in the airport’s surroundings have been completed.
“We reassure travelers and all Sudanese that Khartoum Airport is fully ready and safe in every aspect,” he said.
