Sudan’s Minister of Energy, Al-Mu‘tasim Ibrahim Ahmed, met on Friday with a number of Indian companies, including Bharat, Oswal, and Jaina, to discuss expanding cooperation in the electricity sector.

The minister held talks with Piyush Agrawal, Director of International Cooperation at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), on projects previously implemented by the company in Sudan, most notably the Umm Dabakar Power Station, as well as the supply of transformers for the Singa–Al-Hawata–Gedaref transmission line. The discussions also covered the issue of outstanding debts owed to the company by the Sudanese government related to the Umm Dabakar project.

Both sides explored avenues of cooperation in submitting proposals for various hydropower generation projects, assisting in the rehabilitation of the Umm Dabakar Power Station to restore its designed capacity of 500 megawatts, and supplying transformers for the national transmission company.

The meeting also addressed the provision of a comprehensive training program for workers in Sudan’s electricity sector at Bharat’s training center in Noida, as well as at the company’s factories across India.

The minister expressed his ministry’s commitment to scheduling debt repayments through clear mechanisms, stressing that outstanding liabilities should not constitute an obstacle to strengthening joint cooperation.

For his part, the company’s Managing Director affirmed Bharat’s commitment to continuing work with Sudan under all circumstances and to sustaining joint projects, announcing his intention to visit Sudan at the end of next February.

It is worth noting that Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is one of India’s largest state-owned companies specializing in the manufacture of heavy electrical equipment, including thermal and hydropower generation equipment, transformers, and solar energy systems.

In a related context, the minister met with the CEO of Oswal Cables, Avinash Prasad, to discuss cooperation in the manufacturing and supply of cables. He also held a meeting with Jansu, Director of Jaina Company, during which they discussed prospects for future cooperation.
