Egyptian Expert: RSF is Doing Something Egypt Can’t Tolerate

Cairo – sudanhorizon – Sabah Moussa
Egyptian security and military expert Major General Mohamed Abdel Wahed has pointed out that the border triangle between Egypt, Sudan, and Libya holds strategic importance and was the main route for illegal immigration from Africa to Europe.
Abdel Wahed told Sudanhorizon that there had been an agreement between the Rapid Support Forces and the European Union, where the latter trained the Rapid Support Forces and supplied them with weapons to help prevent the flow of illegal immigration.
He added that this border triangle Harbors natural rich minerals including gold, and controlling the area would maximize the influence of both the Rapid Support Forces and Hafter’s forces. He noted that a regional state has been providing support for Hafter and Hemedti so as to continue exploiting gold and staving off Turkish and Qatari influence and their presence in the region.
The Egyptian expert explained that there is a dilemma between securing Egypt’s borders and dragging it into a regional conflict, stating that the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Hemedti, seeks to frame the war in Sudan as a struggle.
He added that it could turn into an international conflict between the United States on one side and Russia and China on the other, noting that it is now part of an international clash that could escalate.
He said the US wants to manage the conflict rather than end it, and that the Rapid Support Forces are trying to enhance this by going beyond national security, potentially launching operations from this area in any direction.
He indicated that there is a military base within the region controlled by Haftar in Libya that trains and supports the Rapid Support Forces. The Egyptian expert revealed that contacts are between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sovereign Council, and Haftar to de-escalate the tension, stating that this step was a positive reaction.
He explained that Haftar has been using elements with a Sunni background, which will reinforce the accusation that he employs Islamic factions and will dispel the accusation that the Sudanese army uses Islamists in the war, emphasizing that the Government of National Accord in Libya has never and will not allow the reputation of Libya to be compromised.
The expert noted that Haftar’s involvement will lead to conflict in the region, adding that Egypt is monitoring the situation and would not want to drag the area into regional conflict with Chad being near the border triangle as well.
He emphasized that any attempt to undermine Egypt security would be met with a violent response, stating that Hamidti and his forces would not dare to attack Egypt, as the response would be harsh. He explained that Egypt supports the Sudanese army to avoid the region falling into anarchy, however any infringement on Egyptian borders will be promptly responded to.
