Economics Analyst: War on Iran Has No Impact on Food Availability in Sudan
Sudanhorizon -Hala Hamza
Economic analyst Dr. Haitham Mohamed Fathi downplayed the impact of the ongoing regional tensions stemming from the US-Israeli war on Iran on the availability of food commodities in Sudan in the foreseeable future.
Fathi told Sudanhorizon that the country possesses land and sea transport routes with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, which constitute a secure strategic reserve and ensure market stability.
“Food security will not be affected by external developments, especially since reliance on imports has decreased for a large number of products since the April 15th war. This limits the impact of shipping or exchange rate fluctuations on the local market.”
Fathi pointed out to the possibility of imports being affected if regional tensions persist for an extended period or if their repercussions lead to disruptions at ports and supply chains. Any potential pressures are linked to the duration of the crisis and its developments in the coming period.
However he noted that air traffic and the closure of some airspaces have directly impacted and will continue to impact the flow of Sudanese exports.
He said that the suspension of flights to the Gulf countries and ports has disrupted supply chains and increased transportation costs, calling on the government to put in place additional mechanisms to counter the effects of the war on exports and protect the interests of exporters without affecting the local strategic stock.
