Diplomatic Source to Sudanhorizon: “US Aims to Solidify the Concept of ‘Two Sides of the Conflict’”

Sudanhorizon – Exclusive

A senior diplomatic source has described the recent US decision to impose sanctions on Lt. Gen. Mirghani Idris, Director-General of the Defense Industries System, as an attempt by Washington to solidify the notion of “two sides of the conflict” in Sudan. The source argues that the US is trying to equate the rebellious militia, which has violated all international and humanitarian laws, with the Sudanese Armed Forces, which are defending the nation against what is seen as an existential conspiracy.

The source also noted that the US had previously imposed sanctions on Gony Daqlo, the brother of the rebel leader Hemedti and head of armaments for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and is now attempting, with this new decision, to reinforce the concept of equal footing between both sides of the conflict.

Although official sources informed Sudanhorizon that the expected visit of US envoy Tom Perriello has not yet been scheduled as of Thursday, the sanctions on the head of the Defense Industries System are seen as an indicator of pressure the US administration is attempting to exert on the Sudanese government as its term comes to an end.

Earlier today, Washington announced its imposition of sanctions on Lt. Gen. Mirghani Idris, accusing him of facilitating the Sudanese Armed Forces’ access to weapons.
