Darfur Governor’s Adviser: Broad Moves Underway to Lift Siege on El Fasher

The Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Minni Arko Minnawi, has announced the formation of a national committee to end the siege on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State.

El Fasher, the largest city in the Darfur region, has witnessed fierce battles since May 2024 between the army and its allied joint forces against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The city has been under a suffocating blockade by the militia, which has prevented humanitarian aid from reaching civilians while carrying out assassinations and brutal abuses against displaced people fleeing toward safer areas.

According to Abdel Aziz Arowi, Adviser to the Darfur Regional Governor, Minnawi’s recent foreign tour—concluded at the end of last week—was part of wider efforts to break the siege of El Fasher.

Speaking exclusively to Sudanhorizon, Arowi said, “There are significant moves on multiple fronts, both official and popular—the military, humanitarian, legal, media, and external political tracks—all working simultaneously to end the blockade of El Fasher.”

He explained that all these tracks are being pursued vigorously through the newly established national committee, formed last week, which represents a continuation of the joint efforts of the Darfur Regional Government and the federal government.

Minnawi’s adviser also reiterated his profound sorrow over the tragedy in Tarsin village. He added, “Despite the lack of complete and accurate information, we expressed our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, to all the people of Darfur in particular, and to the Sudanese people as a whole.”

Tarsin, a town in Jebel Marra in South Darfur State, suffered a devastating landslide last week, reportedly killing hundreds of residents, though no authority has been able to confirm the exact toll.
