Omdurman – Sudanhorizon

Government authorities in Khartoum State announced a decline in the mortality rate in isolation centers treating cholera patients to 1.2%, which is lower than the permissible rate according to World Health Organization standards of 1.5%.

The state Ministry of Health stated in its daily epidemiological report that the total number of cholera infections in the seven localities of Khartoum State reached (1,270) cases, including (16) deaths. The highest rates of infection were recorded in Omdurman locality, with (496) cases and (11) deaths, followed by Ombada locality, with (203) cases and (5) deaths. (531) recoveries and discharges from isolation centers were also recorded.

Dr. Mohamed El-Tijani, Director of the General Department of Emergency and Epidemics, confirmed that the decline in the mortality rate in isolation centers to (1.2%) reflects an improvement in the level of healthcare and the effectiveness of performance within these centers.

Al-Tijani indicated that the Ministry of Health continues its efforts to detect cases early through field and community teams, and to transfer cases requiring hospitalization to hospitals. He explained that the cholera control plan relies on three main strategies, including: activating rehydration centers in all localities of the state. The Abu Saad Center alone received (72) cases, (64) of which were treated at the center, and (8) were transferred to the Omdurman Hospital isolation center.

The plan also relies on field clinics and rapid response teams, which detected (184) cases and treated them immediately. This is in addition to tracking contacts of patients and working in affected areas, with the transfer of infected patients via ambulances connected to the clinics to (14) isolation centers.

Al-Tijani concluded that the decline in the number of cases is due to interventions in the areas of water sanitation, environmental improvement, and health awareness.
