Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
A meeting held on Wednesday in Port Sudan between representatives of the Government of Sudan and the Chinese Embassy discussed a draft Memorandum of Understanding related to China’s debt owed by Sudan.
During a meeting between the Undersecretary for Planning at the Ministry of Finance, Mohamed Bashar, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Sudan, Xu Jian, it was revealed that, under the memorandum, 345 million Chinese yuan—equivalent to approximately USD 45 million—will be cancelled. The amount represents interest-free loans previously provided by China to finance various development projects in the country.
The meeting also reviewed the status of implementation of a previously granted 200 million Chinese yuan donation from the People’s Republic of China to support infrastructure projects in three vital sectors: water, agriculture, and electricity.
Undersecretary for Planning Mohamed Bashar praised China’s role in development projects and its significant contribution to supporting the national economy and developing infrastructure in Sudan, particularly in the fields of energy, water, and agriculture. He emphasized the importance of continuing joint cooperation to achieve sustainable development in the country.
For his part, the Chargé d’Affaires affirmed the readiness of the Chinese government to provide a grant through United Nations organizations to support the implementation of solar energy projects for drinking water stations in the targeted states of Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Sennar, and Blue Nile.
