Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, told the European Union’s Horn of Africa envoy, Anita Weber, who visited Port Sudan today, that the European Union, “if it wants to work to stop the war, must use all available mechanisms and leverage its influence on the supporters of the militia, as halting political and logistical support is the way to end the war.”

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council (on Sunday) received the EU Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Anita Weber, in the presence of Sudan’s Ambassador to Belgium and its representative to the EU, Abd al-Baqi Hamdan Kabeer.

Ambassador Abd al-Baqi stated in a press comment that the meeting addressed the current crisis in Sudan and the violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces militia against civilians. He indicated that the Chairman of the Sovereign Council made it clear that the Sudanese people would not accept this militia in the political scene and stressed the necessity of the militia vacating civilians’ homes and public properties as outlined in the Jeddah Agreement signed in May 2023.

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council emphasized that as long as there is external support for the militia, the war will continue until the country is rid of this criminal group.

For her part, the EU Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa expressed her happiness at visiting Sudan, noting that her meeting with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council was frank and objective. She affirmed the European Union’s concern with the situation in Sudan and said that Europeans want the Sudanese to return to the areas from which they were displaced due to the war and to resume their normal lives. She added that the EU supports the cessation of the war so that humanitarian aid can reach its recipients, students can resume their studies, and hospitals can return to functioning.

Weber added that the meeting also discussed the importance of the region’s role in addressing the Sudanese crisis, alongside the contributions of the international community. She stated that ending the war in Sudan is the key to enabling the Sudanese people to return and normalize their lives.
