Broad Spectrum of Sudanese Social and Political Forces Reaffirm Support for UN Envoy

Cairo – Sudanhorizon
More than 60 Sudanese political and community groups have issued a memorandum addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, which they expressed full support for the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramatan lammamra.
The memorandum was in response to a previous memo which the signing forces described as “bearing the signatures of individuals who do not possess any legitimate representative status or mandate from the Sudanese people.”
The new memorandum emphasized that the individuals who signed the previous memo save been widely rejected, and their attempt to undermine the performance of the UN envoy constitutes “a blatant violation of jurisdiction and an infringement on the sovereign status of the Secretary-General.”
The signing forces accused the other group of “blatant bias” and “intentional omission of positive developments” in Sudan, pointing out that the Sudanese government adopted a comprehensive roadmap towards democratic transformation with the support of the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League.
The memo confirmed that “the lack of credibility and neutrality in what was mentioned in their memorandum is evident from the fact that the signatories of the missive are members of the SUMUD coalition (previously known as Progress), which signed an agreement with the rebel Rapid Support Forces,” and that some of them are seeking to form a parallel government and divide Sudan. The memo concluded by renewing full confidence in l-Amamra, appreciating his “pivotal role” and valued efforts that contributed to achieving positive developments, expressing the signatories’ appreciation—who represent the broader sector of the Sudanese people—for the efforts of the United Nations and their support for the unity of Sudan and the realization of comprehensive and sustainable peace.
