The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, received a written message from the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, during his meeting today (Friday) in Port Sudan with the African Union Envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belais.
In a press statement, the African envoy explained that the meeting provided a valuable opportunity for consultations on the most effective ways to advance national, regional, and international efforts aimed at securing stability and security in Sudan, given its status as a pivotal country in the region and a fundamental pillar of the African organization.
Ambassador Belais noted that he listened to the Sudanese leadership’s vision and analyses regarding developments on the ground and prospects for a solution, particularly the roadmap announced last February.
The envoy stressed the firm and unwavering commitment of the African Union Commission Chairperson and the African Peace and Security Council to supporting Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, affirming that “there is no room for the existence of any parallel institution on Sudanese territory.” He also reiterated the importance of a peaceful political solution through an inclusive national dialogue, which is being pursued by the Quintet Mechanism comprising the African Union, IGAD, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, and the European Union.
A press release issued by the Transitional Sovereign Council’s media office stated that Ambassador Belais emphasized that the systematic attacks against civilians, the killing of innocent people by the Rapid Support Forces, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure are acts that are condemned in the strongest possible terms, stressing that their perpetrators will not escape accountability.
He further explained that the African Union places the highest priority on advancing dialogue among Sudanese parties and mobilizing resources to alleviate the humanitarian suffering, saying: “Together with our partners, we seek to bring peace throughout a unified Sudan,” expressing hope that the new year will be a year of peace, prosperity, and well-being for the Sudanese people.
