Bank of Sudan Urged to Issue Electronic Currency

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
Former Assistant Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan, Abdullah Al-Hassan, has called on the Central Bank of Sudan to begin issuing electronic currency and enabling its future circulation, while determining the economy’s needs for metallic and paper money to ensure adequate supply.
In remarks to Sudanhorizon, Al-Hassan urged the bank to develop regulations and legislation governing the issuance of electronic currency, allowing for conversion between paper and electronic money with the option of redeeming e-currency for cash when necessary.
He emphasized the importance of establishing the role of a “digital cashier” capable of handling both electronic and paper currencies, alongside issuing clear regulatory frameworks for e-currency operations under the supervision of the Central Bank of Sudan.
Al-Hassan also highlighted the need to organize and strengthen payment systems, including cheque clearing houses, mobile payments, and banking applications, to promote financial and monetary stability, attract resources, and channel them into supporting the national economy.
He further suggested encouraging companies and public institutions that provide goods and services—such as oil, flour, and supply firms, as well as governmental bodies—to begin issuing and using electronic money through their networks and agents.
