The African Union Commissioner, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the peace initiative presented recently by the Sudanese transitional government to the UN Security Council.

The AU official has described the initiative as a comprehensive and forward-looking framework that demonstrates a deep understanding of the acute crisis facing Sudan and its people, and a sincere commitment to ending hostilities, halting violence, alleviating human suffering, and preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner indicated that the African Union attaches great importance to the political, humanitarian, and security elements contained in the proposal, considering them a solid foundation for achieving sustainable peace.

He emphasized that constructive engagement with this initiative is indispensable for any comprehensive solution and for efforts aimed at ending the armed conflict, restoring security and stability, and protecting social cohesion and national unity in Sudan. The Chairperson of the Commission expressed his strong support for the initiative’s focus on an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, the protection of civilians, ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, supporting refugees and internally displaced persons, disarmament, security sector reform, national reconciliation, and reconstruction.

He emphasized that these elements are essential for rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric, and consolidating the foundations of a unified Sudanese state.

The Chairperson also stressed the need for a guaranteed and inclusive process based on transitional justice, national reconciliation, redress for victims, and broad political participation.

He explained that this approach is vital for achieving lasting peace, preserving social cohesion, and preventing a return to violence or disintegration.

Mahmoud Ali Youssef emphasized the importance of a Sudanese-led dialogue during the transitional period, aimed at building a national consensus on governance and unity within a single constitutional framework.

He also spoke of the need to hold free and fair elections under international supervision to fulfill the Sudanese people’s aspirations for democracy and stability. He reaffirmed the Union’s readiness to coordinate closely with the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and international partners to support and bolster peace efforts in Sudan.

He reiterated the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Sudan, and to promoting regional and international peace and security.
