Attorney General: Participation in the HRC Sessions Does Not Mean Cooperation with Its Fact-Finding Committee

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa

The Sudanese Attorney General, Al-Fateh Mohamed Issa Taifour, has confirmed that the participation of the National Committee for Investigating Violations and Crimes in the sessions of the Human Rights Council in Geneva does not imply cooperation with the fact-finding committee the Council had formed earlier, and which Sudan had previously refused to cooperate with.
Taifour stated in an interview with the news site ‘Sudanhorizon’, to be published in full later on, that the fact-finding committee presented a weak report to the council, indicating that it only visited Chad and Kenya and that some neighbouring countries refused to allow it entry into their territories.
The Attorney General pointed to a significant increase in the number of reports and trials in Sudan this year compared to last year, noting that this is evidence of significant progress in accountability and the fight against impunity.
He added that there were recommendations in the meetings of the Human Rights Council in which the national committee was asked to classify the Rapid Support Forces as a rebel militia and its leaders as terrorist elements, noting that reports of rape did not exceed 2%, and that significant facilitation measures had been provided to break the community silence barrier on this heinous crime.

He said that they could easily discover malicious reports during investigations process, and that Sudanese should be assured that no criminal will escape punishment, announcing that the reports of the political forces supporting the militia will be submitted to the court within days and that there are other well-known names of these forces that would be added to the lists soon.
The Attorney General pointed out that a large part of the videos of slaughter and cutting bellies that spread on social media turned out to be outside the Sudan, stressing that no southern citizen was killed in the events of Al-Kanabi and that the defendants in this crime are known and some of them were arrested.
He underlined that the issue of extrajudicial killing is never tolerated and is unacceptable and prohibited behaviour, and that there is verification of videos and identification of the persons who carried out these acts and that they would be held accountable
