Argeen Crossing Director: Daily Truck Traffic Rises to 115 Ahead of Major Rehabilitation Works
Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
The Director of Argeen Crossing, Brigadier General Dr Mubarak Dawoud, has confirmed that commercial traffic and passenger movement through the crossing are operating normally and smoothly, noting a significant increase in the volume of goods and commodities passing through it.
In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, Dawoud said the crossing previously handled an average of 50 outgoing and 50 incoming trucks per day. However, the daily average from the beginning of November through the sixth of the month rose to 55 outgoing trucks and 60 incoming trucks. He expected export and import traffic to increase further in the coming days.
Dawoud added that the rise in the movement of goods and commodities was a natural result of decisions issued by Sovereignty Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, which cancelled Decision No. 74 banning the import of a large number of goods and commodities.
He stressed that the routes used by Egyptian trucks are entirely safe throughout Sudan’s states and cities, with the exception of areas experiencing active fighting in Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile. He also pointed to the strong cooperation and coordination between Egyptian and Sudanese drivers, saying their work was proceeding normally and that all obstacles facing Egyptian drivers inside Sudan had been removed.
Regarding the voluntary return of Sudanese citizens from Egypt, Dawoud said the process was proceeding normally through Argeen Crossing. He explained that the crossing’s administration coordinates with all agencies operating there to facilitate the movement of returnees and provide the necessary services.
Dawoud noted that Argeen Crossing requires rehabilitation, explaining that it was originally designed to handle trucks and goods rather than passengers, but has now also become a reception point for returning citizens. Its original design capacity was limited to just 25 trucks per day.
The crossing’s director revealed that Argeen will undergo extensive rehabilitation in the coming period, to be carried out by the Defence Industries System in cooperation with Egyptian Troika companies. The project aims to increase its capacity to accommodate larger numbers of trucks and passengers.
He added that the objective is to transform Argeen into a model crossing meeting international standards, drawing on the experience of Egypt’s Rafah Crossing, which he described as the best and most modern crossing in Egypt. Work on the rehabilitation project is scheduled to begin early next year.
