Al-Burhan Urges African Leaders to Lift the Suspension of Sudan’s Membership in the AU and to Designate the RSF as a ‘Terrorist Group’
Beijing – Sudanhorizon
In his speech today (Thursday) before the Belt and Road session of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, called on “African brothers to play a positive and supportive role in helping Sudan achieve peace and stability.”
He stated that this requires “reconsidering the suspension of Sudan’s membership in the African Union, taking into account its importance for security and peace in the region and its need for reconstruction and development.”
Addressing African and Chinese leaders, as well as heads of international organisations participating in the forum, President al-Burhan said: “There is no doubt you have followed the major conspiracy that has been ongoing against my country since April 15, 2023, targeting Sudan, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces militia. Through its rebellion, this militia aimed to seize power by force of arms, serving the ambitions of irrational regional powers.”
In his speech, al-Burhan pointed out that the rebellious Rapid Support Forces militia “waged war on defenceless citizens and the entire state institutions, targeting Sudan’s very existence and territorial integrity. Everything the Sudanese people are suffering from now is a result of this militia’s rebellion, and it has become a threat to local and regional security and peace. Therefore, I call for its classification as a terrorist group.”
Al-Burhan urged African leaders to assist in eliminating the Rapid Support Forces militia, condemning its actions and any cooperation with it. He added: “Many of the crimes committed, and still being committed by this militia, have been classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity. What happened in West Darfur (Al-Geneina) is still fresh in our minds.”
He emphasised the importance of China-Africa cooperation in facing political challenges and international ambitions.
