Al-Burhan Meets the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met today with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Pekka Haavisto, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem.

The meeting addressed the overall current situation in the country and the efforts being made to enhance security and stability and achieve comprehensive peace.

For his part, UN envoy Haavisto expressed his pleasure at meeting the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, reaffirming his commitment to supporting efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire and finding a peaceful, lasting, and sustainable solution to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

He stressed the critical importance of adopting dialogue and de-escalation as essential steps toward a comprehensive cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the need to continue engagement in tracks that prioritize the protection of civilians and to explore confidence-building measures that would help create favorable conditions for achieving real progress.

Haavisto said, “The United Nations remains fully engaged with all relevant parties to promote peace and stability and to deliver humanitarian assistance across the country,” noting that his current visit represents an important opportunity to directly hear the perspectives of key political and civilian actors.

The UN official also affirmed the commitment of the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General to Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity as a fundamental priority. He added that the United Nations stands firmly with the Sudanese people and remains committed to working side by side with its international partners to support serious steps toward ending the fighting and charting a path toward lasting peace through comprehensive and genuine dialogue.
