Ahead of SC Meeting: UN Calls for Protection of Sudanese Civilians

New York – Sudanhorizon
The UN has made a new appeal on Thursday that rebuking and criticizing the international community and those it referred to as capable of acting and contributing to putting an end to the atrocities faced by the Sudanese people but are merely counting without taking action, while those attacking civilians, aid, and humanitarian workers go unpunished, and civilians are deprived of even urgent humanitarian assistance.
The call came just hours before the scheduled meeting of the Security Council Friday to receive a briefing on the humanitarian, relief, and security situation in Sudan, presented by Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
The UN stated in the press release also signed by Fletcher, “The international community has repeatedly affirmed that it will work to protect civilians in Sudan, but it is empty words without action.” Fletcher stated that the international community has reaffirmed time and again: ‘We will protect the people of Sudan,’ “Thus, the people of Sudan have the right to ask us, when, and how will we begin to fulfill this promise. Because their country has become a grim example Because their country has become a grim example of the duality of this era, indifference and lack of accountability. He added, “We ring the bell again. This is the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. 30 million people need life-saving assistance. A war that must end rages mercilessly. From Kordofan to Darfur, it has left civilians trapped, starving, without the essentials they need to survive. Random shelling, drone attacks, and other airstrikes are killing, wounding, and displacing people in staggering numbers.” Fletcher says in his statement
The statement which took the form of a humanitarian appeal, has stressed that :our calls are met with pathetic support. Where is the funding? At the same time, hospitals and displacement camps have been attacked, vital infrastructure destroyed, and relief trucks shelled, preventing them from delivering food and basic supplies to those in desperate need.
Fletcher described the attack on a UN convoy on its way to Al Fashir last week as “a deadly attack… on a United Nations humanitarian convoy in North Darfur that once again demonstrated the fading protection for civilians – including relief workers.”
Fletcher laments that the human cost of this war has been reported – while Fletcher complains that the human cost of this war – including the horrific sexual violences – has been reported and condemned repeatedly, yet this talk has not translated into real protection for civilians or sustainable, safe, and unhindered access for humanitarian workers.
Where is the accountability? We call on all those in power to take action to protect civilians and ensure safe access for humanitarian workers. Fund their work and insist on agreements to halt hostilities and other arrangements that would allow us to safely reach the most affected areas and people, Fletcher said urging for greater efforts to secure a lasting, comprehensive, and just peace and stated that despite funding cuts and the dangers of working in these conditions, humanitarian action will not cease in reaching those in need.
He concluded his appeal by saying, ‘Let us work to ensure that the upcoming period is not characterized by indifference and impunity, but rather by a revival of humanitarian solidarity for those in greatest need and a commitment to hold those responsible accountable
