Acting Attorney General Meets the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls

The Acting Attorney General and Deputy Head of the National Committee for the Investigation of Crimes and Violations of National Law and International Humanitarian Law, Kamal Mahjoub Ahmed Saeed, received today (Monday) at his office in Port Sudan the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Ms. Reem Alsalem, in the presence of Dr. Salima Ishaq Al-Khalifa, Minister of State at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Welfare, and a number of members of the National Committee.
According to the Sudan News Agency, the meeting discussed a number of legal and judicial files related to the protection of women and girls, foremost among them accountability mechanisms and guarantees against impunity.
During the meeting, the Acting Attorney General reviewed the role of the Public Prosecution and the National Committee in protecting women and girls from violations committed against them as a result of the ongoing war in the country, efforts to combat related crimes, and the exceptional measures taken by the Public Prosecution to enable victims to access justice and redress.
He also presented an overview of the scale of violations suffered by women and girls, supported by numerical statistics on criminal cases registered in this regard, as well as the measures taken to ensure the rights of suspects in cases filed against them, in accordance with the provisions of the law.
For her part, the Special Rapporteur expressed her appreciation to the Public Prosecution and members of the National Committee for the warm reception and continued cooperation, commending the efforts made in the field of protecting women and girls, and affirming the readiness of the United Nations office to provide technical support to the Public Prosecution in order to enhance its capacity to carry out its role effectively.
