Abu Muridat: We Contacted UNISFA to Remind of Our Duty to Foster Stability in the Area
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
Al-Khair Abdullah Abu Muridat, head of the Abyei Oversight Committee, the Sudanese side, has stated that he has been in contact with the commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and the co-chair of the oversight committee from South Sudan to discuss the repercussions of the bombing at the Al-Na’am market.
In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, Abu Muridat noted that he reminded both parties of “our shared duty and direct role in establishing and enforcing stability, in accordance with the Abyei Protocol and the agreement of June 20, 2011.” He emphasized the need to improve coordination mechanisms to ensure security and remove any armed presence from the area.
The Al-Na’am market—also known locally as the “Amit” market—is located in the far southwest of Kordofan, on the fringes of the Abyei area, which is disputed between Sudan and South Sudan.
On October 19, the market was struck by drones, triggering a series of explosions and the destruction of fuel tankers, resulting in dozens of casualties.
The United Nations has reported that at least 80 people were killed and 27 injured, while local administrative estimates suggest a higher toll, with more than 150 victims.
