A Top Sudan Military Official: Arrangements to Integrate Supporting Forces into SAF
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
Lieutenant General Yasser al-Atta, member of the Sovereign Council and Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), stated on Saturday that arrangements are underway to revamp mechanisms for organizing and integrating support forces into the regular forces, under the various designations of the regular forces
During the war it has been waging against the Rapid Support Forces militia since April 2023, the SAF has relied on thousands of fighters from joint forces affiliated with armed movements, in addition to the Sudan Shield Forces and battalions associated with the Islamist movement, as well as dozens of citizens who responded to calls for popular mobilization and joined the fighting.
Addressing the forces stationed in Omdurman, Yasser al-Atta said, “The SAF will activate the integration and demobilization mechanism in the coming period. Whoever wants to join the SAF according to the established criteria will be able to join SAF. This is the due right for all the Sudanese people. Those who want to join the security forces and the police are also welcome as well.”
He explained that those who do not wish to integrate into the military institutions, then they would be rehabilitated by the state and the armed forces in vocational and technical training centers. He affirmed that all military formations, without exception, will be integrated into the SAF and the military institution, with no rigid timeframe for integration.
Al-Atta stated that the collapse of the Janjaweed in the Kordofan and Darfur regions has led some clans and tribes in the two regions to mobilize and recruit minors into the militia, claiming that the army targets civilians when it enters their areas. He emphasized that the SAF serves all of Sudan and do not act as a militia.
He indicated that the armed forces’ entry into West Kordofan and Darfur aims to protect civilians and their property. He added that the army “does not enter these areas to loot or kill as the Janjaweed have been doing,” stressing that SAF’s mission is limited to establishing security, pursuing criminals according to due process of law and justice, and would work to protect civilians and their properties.
